Queenstown / Wanaka / Fiordland - Southern Lakes Region
Area Overview
The Southern Lakes Region
Remotely positioned in the south-western
end of the South Island, the Southern Lakes is truly the most remarkable travel
destination in New Zealand. The region comprises of the remote Fiordland National Park in the southern end with all its remote natural beauty,
to the small bustling tourism towns of Wanaka and Queenstown at the top of the
region.
The Southern Lakes has the second lowest
population per square kilometre [second only to the Westcoast of the South
Island] and is primarily focussed on tourism as its main provider of employment.
Small towns like Te Anau, Glenorchy, Arrowtown and Cromwell are jostling with
travellers during the peak summer months, but during the cold winter days only
the main ski centres of Wanaka and Queenstown have any major tourist
representation.
The range of activities and facilities for travellers in the Southern Lakes is endless,
with this region being very well prepared for visitors to its towns. The iconic Milford Sound cruises, bungy
jumping, river surfing and jetboat activities were all initiated in Queenstown
which is also recognised as the ‘Adventure Capital of the World’.
Other well know things to do include;
horse riding, wine tours, scenic cruises, scenic flights, skiing and snow
boarding, and much much more…….
